To the east

An eastward bike tour to discover the former socialist Berlin

This cycling tour leads through the districts of Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg, and Lichtenberg. An overview of the gritty past of the former East Berlin and of the transformation of these neighborhoods.

As part of the tour:

Karl-Marx-Allee
Built in the district of Mitte and Friedrichshain by the GDR German Democratic Republic between 1952 and 1960, this boulevard is an architectural icon of the past socialist Berlin. Frankfurter Tor and Strausbergerplatz towers are at each end of the avenue. They were the representive symbols of many uprising workers and parades during the Soviet period.

Lichtenberg
It is the former headquarter of the Stasi, the East German intelligence service. Mainly a working-class suburb during the Berlin Wall period, the Soviet architecture and housing estates are still predominant.

Prenzlauer Berg
Subdistrict of Pankow since 2011, it is located in northeast Berlin. During the German Democratic Republic (DDR in German - Deutsche Demoktratische Republik) it was mainly populated by intellectuals, artists and students. After the Wall Fall and due to the gentrification, Prenzlauer Berg has been steadily renovating and wealthy.

A stop at New Synagogue on the way back to the starting point in Berlin Mitte ends this cycling tour.
